RETURN-TO-SPORT TESTING

Know If You're
Truly Ready to
Return to Sport.

Feeling better isn't enough. Force plate testing gives you objective data on strength, symmetry, and limb asymmetry — so your comeback is backed by science, not guesswork.

THE FORCEDECKS DIFFERENCE

Not How You Feel.
What the Data Shows.

Most return-to-sport decisions are made based on time, pain levels, and how an athlete feels. But research shows that up to 80% of athletes still have measurable deficits even when they feel ready.

ForceDecks™ force plate technology removes the guesswork. In a 45-minute session, we measure vertical force, explosive power, limb symmetry, and reactive strength — giving you a data-backed picture of where you actually are in your recovery.

THE TEST BATTERY

What We Measure.

A full ForceDecks assessment captures four key dimensions of athletic readiness — each mapped to published return-to-sport criteria.

01
Countermovement Jump (CMJ)
Power & Explosiveness
Measures bilateral and unilateral vertical jump height, peak force, and rate of force development. Identifies power deficits that time-based protocols often miss.
Peak PowerAsymmetry %Jump Height
02
Single-Leg Hop Tests
Functional Strength & Confidence
Triple hop, crossover hop, and 6-metre timed hop. Assesses functional limb symmetry and psychological readiness — critical for ACL and lower limb return-to-sport.
Triple HopCrossover Hop6m Timed
03
Limb Symmetry Index (LSI)
Bilateral Comparison
Compares injured vs. uninjured limb across all tests. The gold standard metric for return-to-sport readiness — evidence supports LSI ≥90% before return.
LSI ScoreDeficit %Bilateral Load
04
Reactive Strength Index (RSI)
Speed & Reactive Power
Measures how quickly an athlete can absorb and redirect force — critical for sports with cutting, pivoting, and sudden direction change demands.

IDEAL CANDIDATES

Who Should
Get Tested?

Force plate testing is valuable at any stage of recovery — but is especially critical for anyone approaching a return to competitive sport, physical work, or high-demand activity.

Even when athletes feel 100%, the data often tells a different story. Testing identifies the gap between perceived and actual readiness.

🦴
Post-ACL Reconstruction
Recommended at 12 weeks and pre-return. LSI and hop test scores guide clearance decisions.
🔁
Meniscus, Ankle & Knee Injuries
Any lower limb injury where bilateral symmetry and reactive strength are critical to safe return.
🏃
Athletes Returning to Sport
Competitive or recreational athletes who want objective confirmation before returning to training or competition.
📋
Pre-Season Baseline Testing
Establish your personal benchmark before the season — so post-injury comparisons are accurate and meaningful.
⚠️
Persistent Asymmetry or Concern
If something still feels off after rehab — weakness, hesitation, uneven loading — force plate data identifies exactly what and why.

Clinical Recommendation
Limb symmetry index is at 82%, below the 90% clearance threshold required for safe return to full sport. Recommend 4–6 weeks of targeted single-leg strengthening before re-test. All other metrics have cleared. Patient shows strong power output and acceptable landing mechanics overall.

GOT QUESTIONS

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about force plate testing at RecoveryX.

Force plate testing uses a specialized platform that measures the forces your body produces during jumping, landing, and hopping movements. It captures data that cannot be assessed visually — like peak power, bilateral load distribution, and reactive strength — giving an objective picture of your physical readiness.
A full assessment session takes approximately 45 minutes, including warm-up, all test protocols, and a review of your results with the physiotherapist.
No referral is required. You can book directly. If you have a surgeon or physiotherapist already involved in your care, we can send your results directly to them as well.
LSI stands for Limb Symmetry Index — it compares your injured limb's performance to your uninjured limb as a percentage. Current evidence recommends achieving ≥90% LSI across multiple tests before returning to sport. Many athletes pass time-based criteria but still have significant LSI deficits.
For post-surgical patients, we recommend a force plate assessment at 12 weeks (strength baseline) and again pre-return to sport. For non-surgical injuries or baseline testing, any time is appropriate.
Force plate testing is a private physiotherapy service. Coverage varies by extended health plan — many plans cover physiotherapy assessments. We provide an official receipt for submission. We do not bill OHIP directly.
Absolutely. Force plate testing is valuable for any athlete who wants to identify asymmetries, establish a performance baseline before a season, or verify readiness after any injury — surgical or not.
