Whether you’re dealing with instability, recovering from injury, or returning to sport — the right brace can make a significant difference.

Types of Custom Orthopaedic Braces

Not all knee braces are created equal. Off-the-shelf braces from pharmacies and sporting goods stores provide generic support — they're sized by rough measurements and built for the average anatomy. Custom orthopaedic braces are precision-fabricated to your exact measurements, providing superior fit, comfort, and clinical effectiveness.

At RecoveryX, we prescribe and fit custom braces for a range of conditions and needs:

Ligament Braces (OA/Unloader)

Designed to offload a specific compartment of the knee — ideal for osteoarthritis, medial or lateral compartment overload, and post-operative protection following ligament reconstruction.

ACL Functional Braces

Provide rotational and anterior stability for athletes returning to sport after ACL reconstruction. Used during return-to-play to reduce re-injury anxiety and provide mechanical support during pivoting and cutting.

Patellofemoral Braces

Address patellar tracking issues, patellofemoral pain syndrome, and instability. Custom-fitted to control patellar tilt and glide during activity.

Post-Operative Braces

Prescribed following surgery to protect repairs, control range of motion, and support healing. Typically used for ACL, meniscus, and tibial plateau fracture cases.

The Custom Fitting Process

Our fitting process is thorough, efficient, and completed at a location convenient to you across Durham and York Region. There are no clinic visits required — Sami comes to you.

1

Assessment & Prescription

We review your diagnosis, imaging reports, surgical notes (if applicable), and functional goals. Together we determine the right brace type and features for your specific needs.

2

Precision Measurements

We take detailed circumferential and length measurements of your limb. For complex cases, a 3D scan or casting may be used to ensure a perfect anatomical fit.

3

Fabrication

Your brace is fabricated by a certified orthotics lab to exact specifications. Most braces are ready within 2–3 weeks, with rush options available.

4

Fitting & Education

We fit the brace to your limb, make any necessary adjustments, and walk you through proper donning, doffing, care, and activity guidelines. Follow-up adjustments are included.

Direct Billing Available

Custom knee braces are covered by most extended health benefit plans. We handle direct billing to your insurance provider — no out-of-pocket forms or waiting for reimbursement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a custom brace different from a store-bought brace?

Custom braces are fabricated to your exact anatomy using precision measurements. They provide superior fit, durability, and clinical effectiveness compared to generic off-the-shelf options, which are designed for average body shapes and provide inconsistent support.

Will my insurance cover a custom brace?

Most extended health benefit plans cover custom orthopaedic braces when prescribed by a Registered Physiotherapist or physician. Coverage typically ranges from $300–$600 per brace per year. We verify your benefits before ordering and handle direct billing.

Do I need a doctor's prescription?

A physician's referral is not required to see a Registered Physiotherapist in Ontario. However, some insurance plans require a physician prescription for brace coverage — we'll help you determine what's needed for your specific plan.

How long does a custom brace last?

A well-maintained custom brace typically lasts 3–5 years depending on activity level and use. We recommend annual check-ups to assess fit and function as your body changes over time.

Can you fit me at home or a gym?

Yes — all fittings are mobile. Sami travels to your location across Durham and York Region for the assessment, measurement, and fitting appointments. No clinic visit required.
